What’s the story?

Bale Mountain Farm is located in Arsi in the Bale Mountains belt, which forms the southeastern Ethiopian Highlands which reach up to 3000 masl. The farm is planted from 1,800 – 2,100 masl, though the land continues up to the mountain all the way to 2,200 masl, where there is a nature reserve home to birds and animals. The farm is surrounded by the Wabe Shebelle River and Forest Mountains. The farm is considered to be environmentally friendly with a focus on sustainability coffee production and benefiting the community surrounding the farm. The farm is covered and protected by shade from trees that are grown around the farm which contributes significantly to water conservation and soil fertility enrichment and the biodiversity of the region. . The bluish color of the bean indicates the top quality of it and gives a well noted distinctive floral and citrus cup characteristics.
The farm is actively engaged in social responsibility activities like local road construction, nursery establishment and free distribution of the best coffee seedlings, school building and supports farmers financially during difficult seasons.

Local entrepreneur Israel Degfa owns the export company Kerchache that owns the farm and helps the Bale mountain communities to be a productive and positive place to live and work.

Cherries are carefully selected for ripeness by visual observation by floating them in tanks and hand picking. After going through a pulper, the coffee is then fermented for 48-60 hours in the fermentation tank. The wastewater goes to an allocated and well managed lagoon pool. The parchment coffee is dried on African bed tables for 15 days. The parchment is exposed to sun twice a day in good sunlight, checking being checked in the morning and afternoon to ensure gradual equal drying process.
The end result of all this TLC is a beautifully clean and sweet coffee, with the lime citrus note having a dense sweetness that reminded us of good old Roses Lime Marmalade! This is an exceptional filter coffee, with a range of juicy flavours to aim for, we kept landing on a juicy apricot note, balanced with chamomile tea delicate body. It’s a stunner.
